Rehabilitation following abdominal and thoracic surgery is an important part of the recovery process for patients. In this article, we will explain the concept and benefits of rehabilitation following abdominal and thoracic surgery, as well as the physiotherapy treatments available.

Abdominal and thoracic surgeries are major surgical procedures that can result in postoperative complications, such as respiratory issues, pain, and reduced mobility. Rehabilitation following these surgeries aims to improve the patient’s recovery by optimizing their breathing, reducing their pain and swelling, and restoring their mobility and function.

Benefits of Rehabilitation Following Abdominal and Thoracic Surgery

Rehabilitation following abdominal and thoracic surgery has several benefits, including:

  • Improved Breathing: Abdominal and thoracic surgeries can affect the patient’s breathing, leading to reduced lung function and potential complications such as pneumonia. Pulmonary rehabilitation can help improve lung function, reduce the risk of respiratory complications, and increase the patient’s endurance and stamina.
  • Reduced Pain and Swelling: Postoperative pain and swelling are common after abdominal and thoracic surgeries. Physiotherapy treatments such as manual therapy, ultrasound therapy, and exercises can help reduce pain and swelling, improving the patient’s comfort and facilitating their recovery.
  • Restored Mobility and Function: Abdominal and thoracic surgeries can affect the patient’s mobility and function, leading to decreased strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Rehabilitation can help restore these functions, improving the patient’s quality of life and ability to perform daily activities.

Physiotherapy Treatments Available

  • The following are some of the physiotherapy treatments available for rehabilitation following abdominal and thoracic surgery:
  • Breathing Exercises: Breathing exercises, such as deep breathing and coughing, are essential for improving lung function and preventing respiratory complications.
  • Manual Therapy: Manual therapy involves the use of hands-on techniques, such as massage and mobilization, to reduce pain and swelling, and improve joint mobility and function.
  • Exercises: Exercise therapy is an essential part of rehabilitation, as it can help improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion, as well as reduce pain and swelling.
  • Patient Education: Patient education is an important aspect of rehabilitation, as it helps patients understand their condition, learn self-management techniques, and promote healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Easy to book an appointment and the website had lots of useful information. It was helpful to be able to complete the assessment form beforehand as I was able to really detail the difficulties I have been having. Frances, who I saw was very friendly and encouraging. The excercises she advised for my difficulties have literally changed my life- I have been wfh since lockdown predominantly and sitting for long hours has had a detrimental effect on my back. I put helpseeking off for so long but couldn't any longer. I'm glad I took the risk as Frances instantly alleviated all my worries when I met her. Would highly recommend. Don't put it off like me!

Had a brilliant experience today with Lee. I was assessed then he addressed some of the issues with daily homework to do with multiple exercises. Hands down Move 4 was head and shoulders above Three Shires!! I didnt get any of the above on my first visit with them unfortunately.

Second appointment with Lee for a niggling knee issue preventing longer run training. He is very thorough and patient, ensuring no stone is unturned in getting to the bottom of the issue and putting a plan in place to resolve it long term, strengthen the glutes and free off the hip flexors! Lots of challenging exercises to work on, but already I can feel the difference. Can’t recommend him enough, brilliant. Thank you!!
